But I will be picking up a frame soon with rigid forks and thinking of going down the rigid, cantis and singlespeed route mainly to be totally different from anything else I have.

So from complete novice side, will it suit my area (Very hilly cotswolds ), I still dont really get it  but the word FUN is mentioned loads ,

How many have them in your bat caves? How often do you use them? And when do you choose them over geared bikes?

Considering singlespeeding a steel Parkpre frame, still costing it up at the moment but should be able to get one up and running for about £200 includes purchasing singlespeed kit, handlebars, grips, cranks, bb, chainring, wheels, seatpost & saddle.

i singlspeeded my paho' for a bit but as i use it to commute to work and it's uphill all the way there & obviously down all the way back, no ratio enabled me to actually climb the hills without bein sick or allowed me to maintain a sensible speed on the way back. didn't really try it off road - to my shame  . would love to have one in my stable tho as the simplicity appeals to me. been looking at those modern 'niner' bikes - look interesting - 29inch steel ss... hmmm, wish i had a spare couple of grand.

8 bikes, of which 2 singlespeed and one dual speed :D don't cost much to set up if you don't want to, thing is just to try it. I was very skeptical at first, but in the right circumstances they are great fun - but they're not for every occasion!

I dunno, but I tried it a few months ago, and to this day I feel like I need a hip replacement. It got gears real fast.

No, I have four  , three 26" wheelmountainbikes and a fixed wheel 700c cross bike for work.

The topic to singlespeed or not has been up a few times, some people really like them, others find that it doesn't appeal - it can depend on the sort of person you are and terrain you ride on to a certain extent. Only way to find out for certain is to try it for a while and see if it's for you.

PS The 20" rigid 1x1 is still available if anyone wants it

Always got at least one singlespeed, sometimes more. I like the all or nothing approach you need to ride them :D

Old age and a lack of fitness will probably end my facination though but not untill after 2009's UK SS championships.

Cheers
