hi just interested to hear peoples opinions on whats best and why?
i have just got some disc brakes but im now thinking some hs33 mags in red would look just as good and prob work within 90% of the discs?

brakes

I have disc brakes on a couple of bikes which are great especially in the wet! But my favourites are avid arch rivals. The feel in the dry is amazing.

IMO, its weight v stopping ability.

I love my discs, but my Avalanche is heavier than either of my FS bikes

Discs also dont like wet gritty rides, when all the grit gets in the calipers.

i don't find dry performance to be radically different between any of my brakes (avid ultimate v's vs HS33 hydro rims vs BB7 mech disc vs marta hydro disc), but in bad conditions discs are *far* superior.

other disc advantages are that you can run with a badly out of true wheel (might get you home), and they don't eat away at your rims.

...or do you mean people don't like riding with discs in wet gritty rides, 'cos their discs make funny noises? ;)

I've ridden my disc-braked bike in all sorts of nasty conditions and the wet gritty stuff hasn't made any noticeable difference to pad wear. Unlike with my old Kool Stops on V-brakes, when a soggy muddy race would more or less eat a new pair of pads!

I love discs but you've got to be so careful not to contaminate the pads with WD-40 when cleaning.

He He He!

I got some Muc-Off bike film stuff on my discs by accident.......took a wholes days riding to get full feel back in them

Agreed, and rims dont like the gritty stuff either. I have Hope minis on a Santa Cruz superlight, and feel and stopping power are superb, but as mentioned its wet/muddy conditions where they come into their own. Never bled them in 5 years either!

Hate going downhill, discs stop me going more quickly than I am able to handle, so I love them. So much easier to set up and adjust than Vs or Cantis as well IMO.

Discs are the only way to go! They work better in all conditions, not being affected by water or out of true rims and are much more powerful with better feel and modulation than rim brakes.
