Disc Brakes or V Brakes

OK,

So i have an old Claud Buttler Alpine, I believe had std V Brakes fitted. I want to know what i should use on it now once i rebuild the bike.

I like the look of Discs but had them on my KTM and did not find them as sharp.

Whats everyones thoughts, (please note price is an issue)

Whichever you want, it's your bike

If you're going period correct then use any brakes available at the time

If you're not too bothered about being period correct then you can get decent cable disc brakes nowadays that are better than V brakes for stopping power, although a well set up set of V's will still have you doing a Superman impression if you grab a handful of front brake sharply.

Decent cable discs include Avid BB7 (probably the best there is) Avid BB5 & some Shimano offerings, plenty to chose from, but there are some really crap one out there too!

Hydraulic discs are generally superb, Excellent offerings from Hope, Shimano, Formula & Hayes, but again there are some poor ones out there too (even by some of the big name manufacturers).

Discs are imo not right for an older mtb,I have some very good avid carbon disc brakes,and found them rubbish,and I had some formula discs years ago and they were ok but needed bleeding regularly :twisted: My xtr vs are far far superior to the discs I have had so stick with them

V's are simpler, easier to maintain, lighter and offer as much stopping power as most cable operated discs.
You have to ask yourself how much braking power do you really need?

Xtr servowave are excellent and can throw you over the bars and lock your rear wheel .....they would even stop keepitsteel .......

yeah but that noise as your retro rims wear them self away on those wet and muddy rides is horrible, I fancy going down the disc route for the next rero esque project.

I do fancy a set of Discs, however, after checking the rear wheel, there is knowhere to bolt the disc to. I have the mounts on the forks but i cant mount the disc, so it may be V brakes after all.
