Differences between 1991 Zaskar and Pantera

Hi guys,

Yep here's another one... is it a Zaskar or isn't it? :-P

I was actually wondering, next to all the differences (weight etc), was the Pantera also made in 1991? I've read somehere BTW that the Zaskar started off in 1991 with a 68mm BB shell and in 1992 GT moved on to using a 73mm BB shell? Anyone can confirm that for me?

Also, I have a frame now (just bought it) and it's a bit of a weird one... We was thinking it's an early 1991 Zaskar, but I've just measured the BB shell to be 73mm. Serial number has been removed on the NDS dropout so there's no way to tell if it's 1991 or 1992. It's alu, so that's good... has a U-Brake so that would make it max 1992... and the serial was on the NDS but that can make it either a 1992 Zaskar or Pantera right? Flat end cap also don't mean squat. Seatpost seems to be 26.8.

But what I was wondering: I've checked the downtube of the frame and the top gear cable-stop is riveted in with TWO rivets... I had a 1992 Zaskar LE frame (100% sure, I thik it was April 1992: 0492XXXsomething, U-Brake etc) and that one had the top gear cable-stop rivited with ONE rivet in the middle, this one has TWO rivets in the middle right below eachother.

Can anyone (the more the merrier) please check their Zaskar and/or Pantera to see what cable-stop is on the down tube? This could clear things up for me maybe.

Thanx, Dennis

My 1991 Zaskar has a 68mm bottom bracket, but I seem to remember some people saying theirs had a 73mm, so maybe that was something changed during the year?

I'll try to remember to check the rivets on the cable stop when I get home, but if the bottom bracket shell changed during the year I guess it's possible that that changed too.

It's a shame the serial number isn't there!

Thanx for the info, could be that they changed that during the year...

Only other thing I can do is weigh the frame, dunno what the supposed weight for 16" Zaskar frame should be but I believe around 1800gr compared to approx. 2200gr for a Pantera (or maybe that's 18" weights).

Re:

My '92 Zaskar LE has a single rivet in the middle and a 73mm B/B. If you've got a pic of the frame side on I should be able to tell you for sure what it is..... Hopefully

Re:

Whilst the '92 Pantera looks almost indistinguishable from a Zaskar once it's been stripped there is one subtle difference, in that the headtube/toptube gusset is a slightly different shape.

With the Zaskar, the weld that goes under the toptube is fairly straight and is at roughly 90 degree's to the horizontal welds along the toptube giving it a squared appearance at it's furthest point from the headtube, Almost like it's three separate welds.

With the Pantera it's a lot more rounded and appears like it's one single continuous weld in an almost crescent shape running from the headtube, under the toptube and back to the headtube again on the other side, Subsequently it looks less squared off at the back edge, They also don't look as long as the Zaskar gusset, but this may be an optical illusion because of the slight difference in profile.

If you do an A/B comparison and flick between images of the two frames in bare alloy you'll hopefully see what I mean, Maybe...

That's brilliant, I'd not heard that mentioned before.

My frame has a singly riveted cable stop (and the angled weld as described above).
