Daft NooB question, shifters/brakes

Just bought a set of XT, ST-M739 shifters/levers, (cheers Si  ) what brakes are these compatable with cantis or V-brakes ?, (so i know what to buy)

i know canti brake levers can not be used with V-brakes but is it ok the other way around ?

Also are these units easy to strip down to clean and service or do you just blast them through with GT85 ?

My recollection is that canti levers were thought too fierce to be ideal for use with V-brakes, so it follows (though I've never tried it) that M739s would be a bit soft to use with cantis. But you do have a hi/lo adjustment on them, so they might not be too bad on hi. Have to say though, if you want to run cantis, you would've been better off with the M737 STIs (I think that's what they were called) that were designed for cantis.

Yeah, not sure what to do, was'nt too bothered whether i used V-brakes or Cantis, just wanted to know what to use with the 739 levers but now looking at the frame i would'nt mind using cantis on the rear to save having the redundant cable hanger on the rear of the frame while i think i'll use a V-brake on the front cause call me wierd but i'm not keen on having the bare outer cable going down the front of the headtube :? (i'm using rigid forks)

Would cantis on the rear and a V-brake on the front be ok or just daft :?

Thank's for the offer Corduroyboy  , i'll bear them in mind when i'm sure of what i'm doing.

This is my first retro build so i'm feeling around in the dark a wee bit :?
