Yes they are 8 speed. I'm a Gripshift virgin so have never used any before. But they click as you twist them! There is a little crack in the plastic, next the the fixing bolt (underneath), but otherwise they seem fine.

I can take a picture when I get home, no problem.

Yeah, they seem to be prone to a crack there from ocer tightening.
