Cutting thread into an Ahead steerer tube

Myself and another member on here both have a similar dilemma. We both have bikes with threaded headset/quill stem systems, but the forks we want to use have Ahead steerer tubes. As it is so hard to find steerers with exactly the right length (more important with a threaded system), how easy would it be to get the top cut with a thread?

Pretty sure that both steerer tubes are steel by the way. Any advice greatfully received, especially from those who may have done it.

Cheers

easy enough done
the hard bits getting the die

tracey tools sell them tho

if its a replaceable one have you thought about buying a cheap set
of rigids and removing the steerer from them ?

Not both sets have replaceable steerers. Just so I can get an idea of the price of doing it myself do you know what size/type I would need? I can't work it out from their web site.

Just be sure they're not forks with 2mm thick alloy steerers before you start cutting threads into them. Check that the stem you want to fit will actually fit into the steerer before you chop it down.
