Crap Advice

Unfortunately, the anonymity afforded by the internet allows people to claim expertise they do not have, and invent for themselves new personas, with grandiose qualifications or titles.
I know this stuff; I am a Doctor.

Drilling cracks in Rims  .

1" forks fitted to 1 1/8th parts  .

Welding 6061 Alu is another which scares me and a potential minefield.

Carl.

Bike shops are not what they were, not just one or two of them, I think it is fair to say the majority have lost the edge in experience and expertise and creativity.
I was in a shop recently and two young mechanics were selling a guy new cranks for his new bike, he had assembled it himself and had cross threaded a pedal.
£170 was the cheapest available.
I showed them how to cut the thread using an old pedal and his knackered cranks were united, cost 3/4 minutes.
Bike shops have a responsibility to customers and need to find the balance between costs and expertise etc.

I am an engineer, and a bloody good bike mechanic, but not the best !

I concede to Vic in Dundee and Paul in Arbroath

as an engineer of 30+years experience it saddens me that the world
is now full of people who are frightened of trying things "ooh thats dangerous " they say when you fit a 1" pair of forks to an 1 1/8" frame ,or drill or weld something
makes me wonder how most of them can open a door without hurting themselves
i am of course a doctor

With out the internet the only crap I would have to listen to is my wifes, where would be the fun in that?

my wifey comes out with some great crap
she was recently on about the transient state of poo and how it should not
be equated into body weight "its like a bobsleigh team ,just passing thru"
she said
cheered up my evening

after reading a thread on getting a mobile phone to work and the advice was "stand in a bucket of pigs tears at midnight holding the phone" it should be clear to all that internet advice is to be taken at that. getting irate about it isnt going to help :D
i of course, am a proffessor.

i am now a script writer for a crap comedy show

This thread causes a personal bugbear of mine to raise it's ugly head again.

Basically, the overuse of 'Engineer' as a job title. IMO, (and actually in law in the States) you shouldn't be allowed to call yourself an Engineer unless you satisfy certain criteria involving technical qualifications, experience and (in many cases) continued membership of a technical body responsible for ensuring your skills and knowledge are maintained to a high standard.

Stop-drilling is a well known technique to deal with fatigue cracks, but the diagnosis and treatment doesn't end there. At the end of the day, it's probably not an appropriate way to deal with a crack in a rim. The best way would be the skip probably.

I imagine most members of a site dedicated to the rebuilding of old bikes would have at least a rudimentary idea of which end of a screwdriver you hold - and if not, they can learn here. If they ain't prepared to, maybe try www.stampcollecting.co.uk but mind the pointy bit on those tweezers!
