Crank removal and spring

Hello everyone

I'm after some advice on how to remove my crankshaft, since it feels very worn when rotated by hand. I'm assuming I need a special tool - I've attached a picture of the crank, showing two grooves in a circular plate. Does anyone know how to remove the crank or where I might find a tool that will do the job?

I've also attached a picture of a little spring that is responsible for the brakes returning to their original position, which doesn't seem to be doing its job any more. Does anyone know where I can find parts like this?

I believe the bike is a Dawes Galaxy, if it helps.

What make are the brakes? Dawes only made the frame, all other bits would have been bought in.

Dawes of a certain era used Weinnman brakes. As to wear you find that spring I don't know. Another set of brakes would be a likely source.

As for the BB a screw driver and hammer should loosen it. I am sure Park Tools no longer make one and neither do Cyclus. I don't think Pedro's do either but VAR might.

Thanks for the replies - the link was very helpful.

So to remove the spindle, you loosen the lockring and undo the fixed cup at the back? (I understand the fixed cup is what looks like a plate, on the other side, with two flats on it for a big wrench.) Should it then just slide out?

And the brakes are indeed Weinmann ones, specifically Weinmann Vainqueur 999. Do you know if this set http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Set-vintage-W ... 20befc8714 are similar enough to have the same spring? They seem to be going cheap!

Undo the locking ring and then use something to unscrew the BB cup that has the two holes on either side.... The fixed cup stays in place on the other side of the bottom bracket.

Weinmann brakes go as cheap as chips as they were made in their millions LOL
