Crank Length ?

My first foray into short cranks was completely accidental, about 20 years ago I bought a Hobbs of Barbican and gave it a bit of a refurb. The williams cranks were 6 1/2", I remember thinking they seemed different to my other bikes but enjoyed using them. Fast forward to creaky knee years and I tried short cranks again and there really is no going back for me

I usually ride 170mm on my regular bikes (5ft8.5 and 33 inside leg), recently upgraded my Fat Bike to a Pinion Gearbox frame and Pinion only make 175mm Fat bike cranks, so I though "It can't make too much difference can it"...well how wrong was I, 90 minutes into my first ride my knee's and hips were killing me. Luckily Carbon Wasp in Leeds make custom length Titanium Pinion Cranks (at a price!!), so had a visit and a measure and we decided on 165mm Cranks...what a difference. Riding The Fat Viking Ultra this year was great, no hip or knee pain so I'm sold on shorter cranks for long rides, on short blasts I don't think it makes too much difference (which is good as all my Retro's are 170-175mm)
