comparing fitness and road riding, now my training log!!

If you find riding the road boring forget the average speed thing and mix it up with a few sprints or 10mins flat out then recover and repeat, just riding to averages is boring and you'll struggle to bring speed on as quickly.

i feel like i have been such a lazy git recently!

i did the henley ride last saturday, which i think was about 20 miles? then after a night on the lash in london i then went wales and did 2 rides in 2 days, about 20 miles each, then i had a DR Pepper moment, no really, i did have some DR Pepper then something bad happened and i had to come home, don't risk it people!!! DR Pepper = withcraft or something!!

after coming home i got pissed off with myself and didn't really want to look at the bikes let alone ride them. but today i made myself.
went out on the 07 clockwork for abit of a blast nothing too harsh just a hack ride, stopped at beaulieu and took a couple of pics of the cool old skool cars. carried on into some of the singletrack stuff in dibden enclosure, most of this ride was offroad which was cool.

disatnce 15.36 miles
time 1hr 12mins
average 12.7mph

obviousley this whole thread was to aim myself at the round the IOW road ride on may 3rd, my training partner on the road has dropped out though as at work the other day adam decided he'd chop the top of his finger while repairing the electric window in a bmw, the scissor action bit that makes the window go up and down, poor sod!! i'll do the ride anyway, just bosh it out as fast as i can.

anyway here's a couple of pics of those cars from today. :D

hit the trails again today but i felt really sluggish for some reason although i did get really lucky with the weather, i managed to ride around a really awful black cloud for quite a while, did quite a different route from usual aswel , on your local trails you tend to do the same ride again and again so i started off by going out on to the forest by my usual exit route! makes quite a difference going on the same trails in places but riding them the other way.

anyway, the stats

30.54 miles
2 hrs 26mins
12.5 average

basically i have been really crap with updating this as originally it was a training log for my IOW road ride, but as i am doing mayhem now i'll continue with it.

i have however been a little crap with the "training" as such, i have done rides but not the in between training if that makes sense!!

since my last post on the 28th of april the next thing i rode was the actual Isle of Wight road ride on may the 3rd, here's the link

http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewto ... highlight=

was a good day! :D

then i did bugger all for a week till the Isle of Wight retro ride on the 10th of may, here's the link for that

http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewto ... highlight=

again, awsome day :D

then i went back to work for a few days knowing that at the weekend i'd be riding afan forest with kirbdug and friends, here's the link for that,

http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewto ... highlight=

we were hoping to ride both days but the weather was against us really so me and matt (kingsalsa) beat a hasty retreat!!, then it was back to work again for me.

then a spanner got thrown in the works. today i went to work where i was told one of our team of shift workers is leaving. we have 5 shifts covering a job 24/7 , 12hr shifts, 2 days 6am till 6pm then 2 nights 6pm to 6am then you get 4 days off, you do that 7 times then you get 18 days off. but because someone is leaving, his shifts need to be covered between me and the other guys. i don't mind helping out and i'm glad of the overtime money but what gets my goat about it is i have finally got myself reasonably fit only for work to reduce the amount of time i can ride meaning i wont be as fit or as prepared as i would have liked for mayhem. :(

basically it means i will be working 4 days followed by 2 nights then 2 days off, the first of which i will be sleeping half of because of the nightshift, this will be going on for atleast 4 months!!!!! so i am going to have to ride on the days i am working which with those hours will be very tiring so i am going to stick to easier rides so as not to blow myself out.

although i have got mayhem sorted, i managed to wangle wed/thurs/ fri/sat/sun by using some holiday

doesn't mean i am not going to try though!! so tonight after my 12 hour shift finished i got home and hit munchies, then jumped on the cyclocross bike and did about 15 miles offroad, had to be the cross bike coz my shoes for the mtb's are still wet from saturday at afan!!! any way here is a pic! :D

last ride was friday about 4pm, about 15 miles offroad going straight into a nightshift then riding home in the morning at 6.15am for about 4 miles, it was also a testride for the new st4.

tonight i rode the isle of wight, i finished this morning at 6am and slept for most of the day, i was knackered coz ihad a particularly hard shift, when i got up i had to sort some stuff in the garage then dinner, then it was ride time, as i knew my bodyclock would be out of sink i decided to do a late nightride to tire myself out so i could sleep again at hopefully a sensible time to get myself back into a normal day routine again.

here's a facebook link for the pics and a teaser. :D

today i decided to run a couple of errands and use the bike instead of driving to southampton, the idea being i'd go home an offroad way, i knew it would give me a deacent lump of milage and i wasn't wrong

so todays stats are

26.62 miles
max speed was 30mph, god knows where!!
cheap computer so no more stats!!

gonna try and go out tomorrow aswel but after that the mental overtime starts, i'm gonna be so tired :( but i'm really gonna try and keep the training going.

In the words of the man referred to in the picture on facebook

I had a vision when the night was late:
A youth came riding toward a palace-gate.
He rode a horse with wings, that would have flown,
But that his heavy rider kept him down.
And from the palace came a child of sin,
And took him by the curls, and led him in,
Where sat a company with heated eyes,
Expecting when a fountain should arise:
A sleepy light upon their brows and lips–
As when the sun, a crescent of eclipse,
Dreams over lake and lawn, and isles and capes–
Suffused them, sitting, lying, languid shapes,
By heaps of gourds, and skins of wine, and piles of grapes.

what the fudge?!! :?  what are you going on about?!!!?!!

anyhoo!!

last night i went offroad on the st4, about an hour and a half. coz of this overtime crap at the moment i'm just trying to fit in riding wherever it is convienient and while it isn't raining, basically i don't want to be at mayhem in 3 ish weeks thinking i could have got more miles in.

so tonight after another 12hour shift i got home and had dinner, minced about abit then decided i'd go out again, mainly coz tomorrow i'm working nightshift and i've got a feeling it's gonna rain (haven't checked the forecast, just feels likeit's gonna rain) i didn't want to do the "on the doorstep ride" so i chucked the retro clockwork on the car and drove 20mins to brockenhurst, did a loop from brock to burley to lyndhurst and back to brock, works out at just under 25 miles and i wasn't hanging about either, the bike remained in top ring all the time except one hill, this i am chuffed with as this for a ride local to me is relatively hilly and i'm running old skool proper size rings, 26/36/46 with 12-28 cassette so i'm quite happy to be spinning away in good gears.

the good thing aswel is now if the weather is ok tomorrow i can have the option of riding again before work :D

here's a couple of pics :D (bike poncing pics really!)

since that last ride i didn't ride during the saturday even though it didn't rain, felt it was wiser to rest but yesterday(sunday) i decided to ride into work the long way so at about 4.20pm i left and did 10 miles mainly offroad to work, then did my 12 hour nightshift then rode home this morning at 6.15am again doing 10 miles mainly offroad, pretty happy with that!! :D

finally dragged my bum out of bed around 4pm and minced about abit then had dinner. then thought, time for a ride! :D decided to jump on the road bike as i haven't been on it since the Isle of Wight ride. i didn't want to do a big ride just something to put some time in. 25 miles later i get homw in a rather sweaty mess!!

here's the stats!

24.57miles
38.6max
1hr 16mins
average 19.4mph

that i am pleased with as i wasn't killing myself to do it, i wasn't going easy but i could have gone harder and i didn't look at the average till towards the end of the ride. it wasn't a flat circuit either, sort of rolling in places. the bike was on the big ring the whole time where as last time i did some of those hills i was on the inner ring.

this also means that in about 3 and half months of training since i first started this thread my average has steadily gone up from about 16.3 with adam and 17 on my own to this 19.4.

i am very pleased with that. :D

tomorrow i'm not riding even though i have the day off, as i am working wed/thurs/fri/saturday then sunday and monday nights. i'll be trying to fit in rides to work or rides after work. i figure i need a day doing nothing as recovery can be just as important as training. after those days at work i again will have a 1/2 day asleep then 1 day off and repeat the above days, 4 days followed by 2 nights, then i have 5 days off 3 of which will be at mayhem!!!!! :D :D :D can't wait!!
