My dad commutes on an old 531c,he would like wider tyres with a bit of grip so he can ride on the local towpath. Can anyone recommend a set?Since its a C frame, clearance is a bit of a problem.

Your tubeset has nothing to do with whatever the clearance is on the bike it's made out of.

Re:

I know nothing about road frames but the clearance on this frame appears to be minimal.Has anyone any info on Reynolds/RSP competition steel frames of that era?

The 'c' was for competition - compared to 'ST' for touring etc. as it was made in thiner gauges for racing and fast road work. As such, these bikes tended not to have mudguards and came with close tolerances. However it is not unusual for frames built in 531c as winter trainers or for audax.

Cyclocross tyres are 32mm wide I think. They have a sort of miniature knobbly tread like a mountain bike tyre but fit road bike wheels. If the frame clears 32mm then they are probably your best bet.

I was told that the "c" meant no rack mounts and tighter geometry.

If that were true that shines light on why they picked "c". 531 "crap"? 531 "can't do anything"?

Anyway we can only give you suggestions if you tell us what the brake reach is.

I used to conti top touring 700x32 for mixed surface commuting, 12 miles over mainly tarmac with some grass and gravel. Kevlar is a good addition to a tyre if you're not interested in reduced rolling resistance. For me these were a step up from the cheap stuff I'd been buying 'til then, I've never looked back. The major manufacturers all seem to do these in some form or other. I haven't had a problem with commuter-type tread on tracks, only the equivalent of wet pave or snow, currently using schwalbe marathon plus.

The only time recently I've needed more knobbles was trying to cycle up the side of a valley through a field, I used schwalbe cyclo-x tyres last winter. They worked well but punctured in the spring.
