Colnago Mexico - Is this a fair price? opinions appreciated

Re: Colnago Mexico - Is this a fair price? opinions apprecia

I have been thinking about the missing sticker/decal and have a couple of observations:
If somebody had ‘forged’ the bike or indeed gone to the trouble of re spraying the frame to this level of accuracy, surely for a few pence more they would have forged the sticker as well? They seem readily available on ebay.
I know that sounds like I am persuading myself that this is all ok and legit (which I probably am!!) but that would seem logical to me???

At the same time, strange it is missing.

I'm with you for much of the way - and a decal on a resprayed bike is indeed no guarantee of anything although. for what it's worth, it is possible to get Columbus decals specifically for resprayed Columbus tubes (http://www.bicycledecals.net/columbusdecals.htm), which is what I'll be doing in connection with my bike respray.

As I wrote earlier, there are a lot of signs that the bike you're after is genuine such as the pantographed bits and details such as only 2 top tube cable guides - so it is in all probability the genuine thing - it just seems very odd to me that the decal is missing (on my 26 year old steed, the decal was most definitely pretty worn from 26 years weather and 26 years cleaning but it was still there).

Incidentally, if you get it for £1150 or less incl. shipping, it is a good deal for a genuine Mexico - a similar bike, similarly equipped (but with all decals :) ) was sold recently by eroica cicli in Italy for €1500 incl. shipping.

Muddy waters rarely get clearer....

I wouldn't get hung up over the decal ... All the other signs are good. Decals come off over 30 years.

Just an update - I have agreed to purchase the bike so all being well it should be with me within the next couple of weeks.

Thanks to everybody for your contributions!

Good luck with that ... I am sure you will be pleased.

Crazy. You spend that much on something that can't be 100% authenticated? I wouldn't do that for anything.

The Mavic Gp4s with that badge are early to mid 80s I had a pair with campag hubs as my first set racing wheels.

Re:

Update

The bike arrived today.
I am certain the bike has its original paintwork.
The bike was pretty well described – perhaps only very, very slightly more ‘used’ than I was expecting, but considering it’s 30 years old it looks great and is in very good condition with a few general scuffs and marks as to be expected.

The two disappointing parts being the pedals which are cheap and new and the saddle which is scuffed (but I prefer black with black handlebar tape anyway) – so I will replace the pedals and look for a period saddle (any suggestions??)

Re: Re:

Pleased to hear bike is more or less as good as you had hoped and I'm sure it'll give you many hours of pleasure, both on and off the road - sounds like miles of smiles.

Selle San Marco Rolls or Regal or comparable Selle Italia saddle - I prefer the San Marco products to the Selle Italia products but both are good choices for an Italian bike.

Pedals should - I feel - be Campag pedals, C-Record or Chorus would be my choice but again, when not a colnagolover, I'm a campaglover :)
