Colnago Mexico - Is this a fair price? opinions appreciated

Sorry to bother you all again.
I have found what I think is a lovely Colnago Nuova Mexico that I can purchase for £1150 - which is way more than my initial budget!!

The bike looks to be in very, very nice condition with everything (I think) apart from the bar tape being original the specc being:

brakes: Campagnolo Super Record
break levers: Campagnolo Super Record
shifters: Campagnolo Super Record
rear derailleur: Campagnolo Super Record
front derailleur: Campagnolo Super Record
crankset: Campagnolo Super Record
bottom bracket: Campagnolo Record

seat post: Campagnolo Super Record
hubs: Campagnolo Record
rims: Mavic GP4
sprocket: Regina 7 speed
saddle: Selle CRONO
stem: 3ttt
handlebar: 3ttt
bottle cage: Allara

Would you consider this a fair price for a bike with this specc?? and are the wheels correct (era) for this bike?

That is a very nice bike and it looks to be in exceptional condition but I personally would not pay that much for it...

I thought it was a bit on the high side, but when you start seriously looking, there is a lot of tat or badly renovated stuff about. I guess people with the really nice bikes hold on to them, which ultimately pushes the price up.

I would far rather spend £750 - but can't find anything!

That is a nice bike. If you want it and can afford it and it fits buy it.

It's worth exactly what you are prepared to pay for it. You are right, there is a lot of tat, a lot of cobbled together stuff. That bike looks clean, the spec is the best you can get, all looking clean and straight. There are not many around to compare at that price. Ask yourself if you would kick yourself hard if you didn't go for it. You would spend thousands building that bike from frame and bits. I would say £1000 is a fair price.

If you like it and it makes you happy, then it's worth the money. I think that anybody selling a Colnago probably adds a couple of hundred on just because it's got the name, but then again it will probably hold its value in the future if you decide to sell it on. Go on . . . buy it, and get it out on the roads and I'll look at for you at L'eroica.

Hi,
I am no Colnago expert but I love the bikes from the 80s.

I can't comment on the rims - the paint scheme for the frame seems to indicate '86-'88 and I have no knowledge of Mavic's rims of that period (my '87 Colnago is equipped with '87 Wolber TX Profil rims). However, for me, the bottle cage is not a mid-late 80s bottle cage.

What does bother me a bit is the fact that if the paint job on the frame is the original, where is the Columbus tube decal that should be at the top of the seat tube?

As far as the price is concerned, £1150 may be a bit high but if all parts works, if the frame is true, if the paintwork and especially the chromed parts are undamaged (no signs of rust, flaking etc.), then I don't think it is far off the mark for a complete bike. (As I say what worries me is that it might be a respray that hides something, since there is no tube identification decal).

There are a lot of other members on the forum who know much more about Colnagos than I do - saarf, stringfellow and citoyen du monde are three that I can think of - but I think if you can knock the price down to around £1050 you'll be getting a very good bike.
