Clear coat on old paint?

I agree, matte clear coat would be better.

This was my first effort at this sort of thing and an experiment from beginning to end. After all, if I didn't like it, I'd just have the frame powdercoated.

I do wish I had taken a before photo.

I was working from the premise that, while I would hide the patchwork of paint quality, I would try to blend it together with a red wash.

Most of the texture you see is the roughness in the original paint. Some is a little too much clear coat.

Yes it is. As I said, it is an experiment. But, again, most of the texture you see is the original paint. Spraying would not have filled in that texture. It's an aesthetic choice and I think I'm going with it.

If you would of wet sanded and then shot it with a $6.00 can of enamel clear it would of came out much better IMO. 2000 grit wet sand, wax and grease remover, fizzbomb away with multiple light coats minutes apart.

I may try that yet. I did wet sand at one point. The problem is that the paint is so thin that it takes very little sanding before you hit the white under coat.
