Claud Butler. Fillet Brazed, Road/Track. 1953

Re: Post re-paint: Enamel Cure time? Wait to build?

I was most impressed by the attentive service and quick turnaround. Lots of phonecalls to double check things with me. I've had decent results elsewhere, but its been a case of send it off with instructions then suck it and see!

Re: Post re-paint: Enamel Cure time? Wait to build?

Very nice...more of a 'duck egg' colour. Love that fork crown and the early Claude Butler script. I won't ask you how much renovation cost.

Re: Post re-paint: Enamel Cure time? Wait to build?

The renovation was phased thankfully!

Yeah, sort of Duck Egg. I was trying to find a '50s looking Eau De Nil really as it was an original CB colour and when I spotted Kevin's Bianchi it looked closest. None of the Eau De Nil colours you see these days looks right to me. Too pale, vivid or putrid!

The renovation was costly. It had a new head tube done by Kevin @ Woodrup a year ago, but the fork was already all chrome so no cost there. Got the rear ends chromed at that point. It looked weird just the forks. But the headtube "surprise" meant I scrapped painting it until this year as I was restoring a bike for my dad. So, by being stalled, the renovation wasn't too bad. But all in, contributing the equivalent funds to an actual new frame may have been more sensible. But then what would I do with my time!

Re: Post re-paint: Enamel Cure time? Wait to build?

Kevin Sayles typical top job on the forks :)

Back in the 70's the frames came back after being stoved at 600 ish Farenheight so by the time they got back to the customer they were ready to build.....

Has something changed?

Shaun

Water based paints nowadays Shaun, we have to look after the environment

Oh, he didn't do the fork. Just the head tube. Although I do think the fork is a replacement. The original CB one would've just been two bands, rather than the pointed lug, wouldn't it?

But, yep, Kevin's work is flawless and he was extremely helpful. The head tube brazing is superb. I actually kind of think if I'd scrapped this when realising it needed a new head tube I could have a decent fund towards saving for him to build me a frame. Plan's always been to sell my Bob Jackson track frame to cover the costs of this renovation. It's the same colour almost. Done to make me less likely to try to find away to keep both! And the parts will come off that. Not a perfect period correct build this time round.

Do you mean on the wheels in the background? They were on rims I bought recently. They're not the real deal, more like fluffy hair nets you'd be forced to wear in a kitchen! Unless you mean the Daniel Salmon-esque mudguards? Their a modern similar design.

I should change this thread's title, to be for this bike I guess. It'll give me an outlet as I try to wait two weeks to build it! Thanks for all the replies. Appreciated.

Some photos in the light of day...

It's got quite the wheelbase and long stays. The tyres are deflated, but if I'm going to use 700c wheels think I might need to go up a tyre size to 28s. Coupled with mudguards, clearances might look a bit more normal.

That would be really nice to think. Did he do most of the lugless building? How many frame builders would there have been, a fair few I imagine?

It's had to have a few repairs over the years though. Seat tube, head tube, and not sure if fork is original. So even maybe not much left of his work if it was!
