So, I've had three minis before, but not in the last 20 years and always wanted another.
It's not a mega money build, money is actually the lmiting factor TBH. I've saved for 2 years to buy the best I could find, knowing that I'll be doing all the work myself, so was looking for one with as little rust as possible Yeah, Right. I think they came from the factory with rust.
So, a while ago I picked this up for cheap (for a mini). Someone else has started the work, non runner, but complete. And mainly, very little rust. A few little scabs in the left rear wheelarch, and the rear valance is rotten. The doors are shot, but they're not structural
She's tax and MOT exempt next April, but I plan on getting her MOT'd regardless. My aim is for zero advisories (!).
Stage one was getting teh engine running. Done. Carb rebuild, manifold gaskets, Timing, Coil wiring etc.
Stage two - rust eradication. I want no rust, and she OBVIOUSLY needs paint. today I got this finished off;
I love angle grinders
Dropped the rear subframe to make sure there were no nasty surprises, and there were none! In fact, the subframe appears to be a recent replacement and only has very mild surface rust
Welded up a few little scabs, and threw a new rear valance on
I'm calling that done
Next, I need to do a little work in the wheelarch and she's ready for some paint. The observant among you will already have noticed that the roof has already been done... I tried Nardo grey on teh bonnet and boot. Don't like it. I have now decided on the colour, and would you beleive it's a Dacia colour?
Ive had 3 proper mini's like yours an 850 a 1000 and a 1275GT and out of all of them its the 850 I miss the most (rose tinted glasses much)
Sure the 1275GT went like a rocket but it was boring in a hilariously dangerous way I knew the 85a had no guts so I just enjoyed driving that.
This is a great project and I really look forward to update however long they take!
All the very best with it
