Cilo with Ht tubes

Hi

I have seen a local early '80's Cilo roadbike which is advertised at £120, it has full shimano 600 arabesque groupset but have just noticed the frame sticker says "HT tubes"

Is it worth pursuing ? as looking for a restoration project. Thanks.

Re:

Had a look and decided to buy !

It's a Cilo with a full shimano 600 arabesque groupset with shimano 600ex dropouts, San Marco suede saddle and Fuji stem and dropbars.

It is also marked with " the Hosteller model" on the seat stay also a sticker saying, Built with V.C.L super-steel tubes.

Already stripped it down, but stuck getting the crankset off.

Dated the shimano 600 arabesque to March 1981, so I'm assuming the bike dates from that year.

Does anyone know what year they started with 130mm rear dropout spacing as the previous keeper had fitted a modern back wheel to it.

Needs new wheels, anybody recommend a sympathetic wheelset to go wth the bike ?

So no Cilo experts here then ? Oh well might have to post on bikeforums.net or I'll just keep talking to myself !

That looks like a bargain buy for £120. I think 130mm OLD dropouts started to appear in the late 80's early 90's. Some folk squeeze 130mm OLD wheels into 126mm frames. Your frame will most likely be 126mm OLD. Try and get some matching hubs and not modern ones. I have never heard of VCL super steel tubes. How heavy is the bike and what size seatpost does it take? Is there a nice ping or a dull thud when you ping the tubes? Good luck with the build.

The one I had dealings with was a variation on the 4130 chomoly tubing plain lugs& a 26.8 seat post in the league of Clunker/ Premier div i would have placed it around half way IIRC the quality of the fit out kit was were the model placed in the range & the same frame covered several models.

Thanks, I think the frame has been cold set to 130mm as measured the dropouts to 130mm.

I think the frame is toast as noticed two ripples under the top tubes just behind the headtube, first dip into the vintage world and screwed up, oh well at least I've got some decent shimano parts to build up a frame with !

Thats a shame. Are you sure its been crashed and not just rust under the paint bubbling? Try posting a side on photo and a close up of the area in question and see what folks here think.

There seems to be no damage to the front fork or headtube, so don't know whether it is a knock or something else.

Looks like crash damage to me. Some 1980s tubesets like Reynolds 531db had over-strong forks and the frame would fold up before the fork...a bit of a conceptual flaw as I'd rather trash something replaceable.

Do you have any evidence that the fork is original anyway?

Frankly if you have the components, fork and wheels then you have still done handsomely for £120.
