Cilo DH bike

Re:

Good question, been wondering about this bike for a while!
From what I can vaguely remember, the suspension worked very well and appeared (looked on tv) to be smoother than the alternatives at the time. Fascinating bike.

Re:

From what Ive read Perakis was less complimentary :) .Apparently the wheelbase was greatly extended due to the 2 adaptors on each end.If you look closely you will see the hubs are an extra 6 inches each way to accomodate the 2 attachments.Adding a foot  to a stock rigid frame`s wheelbase is not a good idea. This completely threw out the handling making it a handful and pretty much unrideable unless piloted by the likes of Perakis. The travel was around an inch or so of elastomer boing!

Re:

Ah, ok - sounds pretty bad then!
I remember commenting with a mate how smoothly it seemed to flow with less suspension bob than the competition, but that must've just been that long wheelbase - and the awesome pilot.
An intriguing bike for sure though, I'd love to know more about it.

Re:

Only the rear end was lenghtened. The ATZ fork had to be added to the front rigid fork turning it by 180 degrees so that, with the addiction of the fork, the offset went back to a "more or less normal" measure. However, I only saw pics of Perakis winning the Kamikaze with that bike. i think for the other races he used a hardtail. Well, for the Kamikaze a truck like that might also have worked.

However, Perakis was seen riding way stranger bikes... look at this ATZ

Re:

One of my favourite suspension fork…

Perakis won the Kamikaze downhill with it and Giovanna Bonazzi was DH worldchampion with it !
Francis Glatz, the swiww creator made a prototype specific for the rear. But the "ATZ Swingpro" was always avaible for front :D

Later, Francis Glatz worked on that full suspension bike :

Re:

Ah I see,the front forks were inverted to lessen the effect of the lengthening of the wheelbase.I remember the ATZ frames, they were used by a few riders werent they other than Perakis and Bonnazzi?

The fork was inverted only for keeping a classic fork rake.

Bonnazzi used only the front fork. But Perakis used the rear specific "Swingpro" (needed 135 hub spacing) and was the only guy, running on the ATZ prototyp. I think that only 1 prototyp was made

Re:

Interesting. In 93 Eurosport did a small piece on dh bike developments and Perakis` bike featured. From 91-95 some of the most bizarre designs came and went but that Cilo always stuck in my head.

Re:

This thread reminds me of the Bike Control "Shockster", essentially a retrofit rear suspension for your rigid frame....

And on another " front fork backwards " theme, this was apparently available as a retrofit item in the early 90's...
