I guess I am lucky I learned to spanner my own bikes before ever encountering Halfords. Being from a crofting background, we did everything ourselves. I have rarely been without a toolkit, no matter where I have been living.

:)

Same here - I grew up on a farm, where you just get on with it and fix things yourself. I really find it incredible that a lot of people who otherwise claim to be "into bikes" seem to be incapable of performing even simple maintenance, like fitting new chains and adjusting brakes and mechs.

Remember, everybody laughs at a hillbilly until they want something fixing.....

mtb makers have made good road bikes like Klein, fat chance
Gary Klein was a roadie and track racer, and built road and touring bikes for a decade before making his first mtb!

"Chris Chance first started frame building on his own in 1977. In the five years that he devoted to designing custom frames, he built Criterium, time trial and long distance frames for road racing; and touring frames for outdoor adventurers and sag wagon tourists."

Ive just got a 2010 boardman, The pro mountain bike hardtail version.....

Keep an eye on the chainstay/BB joint as I've seen three of these frames fail in this area. Two of them had never even seen more than a canal tow-path....

I built a Boardman bike with DI2 for Team Sky's equipment buyer to test a few months before the team launch. Looked OK to me.

Apologies for the OT, but what do you think of DI2? I don't think I've heard a bad word about it yet. Mechs look a bit bulky though especially the front.

I bought a chain tool from Halfords last week.

It broke the first time I used it. The inside bits that hold the chain in place were plastic, painted black to look like metal.

I have not heard about these problems with those frames. Can you point me to where they are featured online? :)

I'm not talking about online, I'm only saying that I've seen them when they came into our shop. A lot of companies tend to hush up things like this, unless it's a high number of failures, as they don't like the negative publicity.

You work in Halford's?

How many have you seen, versus how many have been faulty?

I was thinking of recommending one to someone. I have second thoughts now.

No. The bikes I've seen have been Halfords' customers who weren't satisfied with the response when they took the bike back. They were told they'd been abusing the bike so they left.... Two of them definitely weren't whereas the third was questionable.

I wouldn't worry too much as they've probably sold hundreds of these bikes. There'll always be a small amount that fail (as with any other brand). It's just coincidence that I've come across three of them.
