Check out this odd lacing

The Miyata Ti bike I got recently came with a front wheel that had a lacing pattern I have never seen. I have no reason to believe it wasn't stock, based on the XT hub and matching rim...but what do you think?

It's called "crow's foot" lacing. To be more precise, it's a hybrid crow's-foot/radial lacing: plain crow's-foot only works when the number of holes per flange is divisible by three.

I think it's quite unlikely to have been standard on a set of production wheels

That's pretty cool stuff! I will have to re-examine the back wheel to see if any advanced tricks were integrated there too.

Currently I have a set of NOS Sun/DeoreLX wheels on the bike that I already had, because a gorilla tightened the nuts down on the hubs and I couldn't disassemble them for overhaul. I will get some help with that, and put the wheels back in action.

Been reading up myself and it does look initeresting, though better on 36h rims I think. I've a few 32s that may get this treatment as/when the time comes. Thanks for posting.

My front wheel is a 32-spoke, and is described in the referenced article as a crow-foot/radial hybrid (as my linked pictures show). I double-checked my back wheel and it is standard 3x both sides. I would love to know what happened in the bike's history that caused the front wheel only to be relaced to this pattern. But I will never know...

Haha, I was thinking the same. I was planning on this for my Richter 8.0, when I get that far.

the only real problem is having to buy three lengths in small numbers for the rear wheel. And the issue of spares having different length spokes. The wheels on my marin are 36h and the front is disc so both could be done!
