Well the slipping is still there but only on the 2nd highest cog as far as I can tell so I will replace the cassette and chain tomorrow and see if that improves things.
On another note, the chain came off one of the jockey wheels today! It happened after I threw it into top gear. Had a look at both wheels and one was decidedly wobbly. I've tightened it up and hope that this and the old chain were the causes.
Is there anything else that could be afoot? I'm definitely learning a lot about the world of gears with this bike. When everything is working it is a really nice ride but I hate not having confidence in what'll happen when I put a bit more force on the pedals.
