Chain Slipping

Well the slipping is still there but only on the 2nd highest cog as far as I can tell so I will replace the cassette and chain tomorrow and see if that improves things.

On another note, the chain came off one of the jockey wheels today! It happened after I threw it into top gear. Had a look at both wheels and one was decidedly wobbly. I've tightened it up and hope that this and the old chain were the causes.

Is there anything else that could be afoot? I'm definitely learning a lot about the world of gears with this bike. When everything is working it is a really nice ride but I hate not having confidence in what'll happen when I put a bit more force on the pedals. By replacing the cassette and chain I should be alright surely?

Looks like a threaded block (not casette) ....have you got the correct tool ?

Provided everything lines up there's not a lot can go wrong, having said that there seems to quite a few loose bits that you have encountered :(

Thanks for the info. My local Evans and Halfords are both pretty friendly I have used their tools in store before so should be fine. The only independant store near me is really bad unfortunately.

Well I have replaced the block and chain. The old block needed to be broken to be removed as neither Halfords or Evans had the tight tool! Everything seems to be OK now, we will wait and see. Thanks for everyone's help, looks like Shaun's original diagnosis was correct!

What kind of block was it? It suprises me that neither place had the right tools. The only freewheel tool my shop (I am a small LBS) does not have is for those old mailard hubs which take a large tool only made by VAR now as far as I can tell.

doesn't surprise me at all :) I'd be surprised if they had any freewheels tools apart from Shimano and BMX 4-prong. Long live real bike workshops, smelly places inhabited by wizened old codgers

I'm not sure, but looking at some pictures it does look like it could have been a mailard jobby. The hubs are Campagnolo and the bike is from around 1980/1981 if that gives any clues? It certainly had any more grooves than modern ones. Both shops said it was a rather old style which I suppose supports the fact that it needed replacing. Anyway, they kindly broke/removed it for me so no complaints!

Regina used to have blocks that had a shed load of splines.........IIRC I had to buy a new removing tool for my regina oro gold block. Mind you that was a good few years ago LOL
