how do you tell if your cassette is worn (too worn?)? i mean other than your gears slipping when its on the bike? is there a way of telling? maybe visually? is there a tool for it?

Hooking of the sprocket teeth rather than a square-ish and symmetrical profile. If they start to look a bit like a shark's fin, they're on the way out!

ah i thought as much, the little ones are starting that but i guess its cus theyre smaller! what about the big ones? the bigger ones are quite squareish, sort of like the bottom (big part) of an egg, is this ok?

Big ones don't cause as much problem because of the greater wrap-around but TBH, as soon as wear is seen, I'd change chain and cassette together.

I've seen a worn chain fook a relatively new cassette in less than 200 miles.
