I watched a guy having a total knee replacement whilst he was conscious (he'd had an epidural so numb from the waist down), he was chatting away about holidays whilst some hardcore carpentry happened at his knee!!
The trouble with filming surgery is that it's always such a compromise for the surgeons to have to give a clear view for the camera, and most of what you can see is a meaningless gory mess!!
If you're still getting pain at the wrist, you could try Youtube or googling for Tinel's Test or Phalen's test - those are the two tests that are used to diagnose Carpal Tunnel, they're quick and pretty simple to do. Surgery is always a last resort, just because of the inherent risks.
