Car Sharing lanes/Bus lanes

Semi-related speculative market research question ...

How much would you be willing to pay for secure cycle parking & a shower?

we had a bus lane put in near us and now the consequence is becasue the lanes used by cars are so narrow there is even more congestion and particularly bad heading out of town (the opposite direction to the bus lane) because cars get stuck behind the poor cyclists heading out of town who then get crowded off the road

I reckon about £2-£3 per day would be pretty good and maintains the cost effective side of cycling. Much beyond that and you start to make people think they'll just drive and save the hassle of a shower/changing.

bus lanes arent there to reduce congestion. Theyre there (in theory) to make the bus go faster and entice commuters to use public transport.

I take it you've never used a bus in bristol? ;)

The new bus lane down the side of the M32 is used by 2 bus routes and you only see a bus on there a few times a day, meanwhile they have made the lanes so narrow that even a breakdown or slight prang brings traffic chaos to the whole city. It worked far better before and I doubt if the buses have any extra passengers.

I think most of the time it is a case of councillors being seen to be green without making any real investment in infrastructure or genuinely sustainable transport policies.

I'll get back down off the soap box soon. ;) it was actually far quicker coming to work today, just left half an hour later and the worst of the traffic had cleared! from now on I'll just be a bit late into the office and save myself a huge headache! :)

Wow - that's lower than I was expecting. Two quid a day is less than a return bus journey isn't it?

It's a really good idea. If you could get 300 members paying £3 per day, then extra income from the servicing side of things you'd do really well.

That's essentially what I was thinking. Local councils should be willing to stump up some cash as well (yeah right, like they have loads to throw around!). Trouble is ... 300 bikes take up quite a lot of room to store.

Anyway, an idea in, shall we say .... germination
