Car has been standing unused for one year and...

A random one, but is the battery in the remote keyfob good? Don't know about VW but in other makes if the battery in that goes flat it can cause all sorts of problems with immobilizers...

Re:

Good call Ross
Well, after 10 hours charging I tried to start it again at this time I got the starter motor turning...but it didn't start. Slowly slowly catchy monkey

The battery in the remote is a red herring, the car reads a small chip (transponder) in the key itself regardless of whether the fob part works.

I once had to start a V8 after 9 years of standing around...

Re:

Yay!
Got it started on jump leads...quite a bit of puffing of smoke/condensation
Took it around the block (private road of course) and it seems okay...quite pokey! Handling/steering feels vague compared to my ancient Subaru, but it really was just a quick blip to see if the brakes worked etc
Better get it in for a service and check for rust

Re:

MOTed now...couple of bulbs and emissions high, probably from standing still for so long, new lambs fitted
I have been driving it for a few days now and have come to the opinion that...Mark IV Golfs are shit. My older Subaru was much much much nicer to drive.
The cabin creaks, the suspension is crude, handling a bit rubbish...its doesn't feel like a real car. 'My' V5 isnt that fast and the slush box is horrible. I shall hand the keys back

Mk4 Golfs were definitely not 'all that'. VW realised they were just getting bloated and poor handling and fixed it all on the Mk5

As 'free' cars go, its better than most but theres nothing worse than having to drive a car that you dont like. I've been driving a Fiat Stilo for 30,000 miles since July last year - its sole purpose was to take on the Focus and the Golf. It failed miserably so I can understand why Barry Hurgandy dont want his.
