Cantis - quality brakes or squealing non stopping nonsense?

Canti's are crap, not used them for over 15 years but like a complete dick (and bowing to Period Correctness    ) I'm building three bikes with them on (Paul Stoplights, M739 and M900)

My Pace (main bike for anything serious) has Magura's.....stops like Roadrunner 8)

You can't hold back progress, discs are far better than any rim brake in every department except one weight.
Personally I would much rather carry a few grams extra and have a brake that actually works (and doesn't wear expensive rims away!). Do we really want the lightest possible machine or one that works as best we can?
Cantis really do belong in the dark ages, i have them on the retro bike but that is for special days, for real riding a modern bike with modern components every time.

My 2p worth.

Absolutely LOVE 'EM!! 8) That's the reason why my Scale is up for sale... excessive noice?? H*ll no, not with the right blocks and the right setup (at least not for me). My disc brakes made so much noise I'd scare the living cr*p outta people walking their dogs in the forest (and their dogs) from about 10 yards off  Although the dealer said that should be solved with using raisin blocks...

But the fun out of disc brakes was gone for me. Only brake really stopping perfectly was the front one, and that's the one I never use anyway. Never got the rear one working well (not me, not the dealer either).

And yeah, probably canti's don't provide the best stopping power (I've heard V's are much better, but never had any)... but they've worked best for me so far. And I don't like stopping anyway, I prefer "slowing down" ;-)

Properly set up cantis work great. They are not voodoo. If you think Vs are a magical improvement in function over a good set of cantis then you should practice your mechanic skills more. I think cantis get a bad wrap because many of the high priced cantis of the era were under engineered and pooly concieved POSs annodized purple to blind the consumer from noticing that they were junk. Compared to something like Curve or Gravity Research cantis, 1st gen LX Vs were a gift from the gods!

I have one pair of cantis (other bikes use V/Disc/Coaster) and they are only there cos its a '90 bike, so anything else would be wrong, I cant set the bloody things up though, they are about as effective at slowing the bike down as gently blowing against it would be.

I'd agree that they are finicky, but when setup by someone who knows what they are doing they are OK.

The problem is that when they feel firm they are being used with least leverage. The slightly spongy feel is when the high leverage is flexing everything. You have to get used to that spongy feeling, then they are fine.

That said, they do take a lot of looking after, and pad changes are a real nightmare as you have to go through the whole palaver again.
