Bike hoarder

the paint came off pretty easily, just lashings of paint stripper and a few blisters (wear gloves next time  ), the primer was a bit more hardy but got thru about 8 brillo pads and it was all good.

Will post a picture of them later on the cannondale.

I did think it was a strange place for a crack?

I have heard that dales were prone to cracking at the back end hence my cautious approach.

Please be carefull bead blast or sand blasting cannondale frames - the tubes are VERY thin in places and I've seen where people have accidently gone through the frame...

just looks like a sctratch to me from a tool in the factory.

Doesn't to me, it still looks like a crack :( . If you want to continue using it as it is then you should at least stop-drill ( even only 1.5mm dia.) to stop the crack propagating further.
I still think the best option would be to get someone good to TIG weld it for you.

Here is what I would try - but bear in mind I'm not an engineer - I would drill either end of the crack (as suggested by andy) and carefully file the crack to make it slight wider on the outside I would then fill the holes and the crack with JBweld or similar high strength epoxy then see how it rides. Leave it bare for inspection later.

If any cracks appear in or at the edges of the epoxy then it will need welded.

If anyone wants to shoot me down/correct me for this feel free.

I suppose I could ride it with the scratch/crack marked, if there is any further developments then it is a crack and will need fixed. if it stays the same it might well be a scratch- is this too simple/foolhardy an approach?

The stay is quite thin at that part of the frame and wondered if drilling or welding could do more damage. :?:
