Good explanation andy. Worth reminding that if you have the aheadstem going below the thread by 5+mm then it's probably fine.

Not correct.

A quill stem spreads the load throughout the length of the steerer tube from the quill inside the steerer. Furthermore the stress where the quill inserts into the steerer at the top is supported by the headset and its two clamping nuts. In this case the tension load on the steerer thread is only that of the headset preload, not from the stem and bars.

Actually that's not entirely true. The forces that the threadless stem clamp and the end of the steerer tube see are comparable to the forces experienced by the point on the threaded stem where the extension begins, not the quill at all. On a hard landing, for example, shearing forces forward have little effect on the quill, but rather are focused on the base of the stem extension. Pic (from this board) is attached which demonstrates that shear failure of a stem. I wouldn't use a threaded steerer tube with threadless unless I had not other option, and then only if the lower edge of the stem was clamped on non-threaded tube and the threading begain inside the stem stack height.

When in doubt tho, as with all things, just say no.

Unfortunately for you its 1", but it does mean that you can buy them,pm him and he'll tell you the makes

I ordered some rigid forks from america for my monster but when they came, i had under measured the size and would have been to short if i had cut of all the thread,so i cut them to size including about 8mm of thread.Thought it was a bit of a bodge but clamped them stem up carefully and tryied it out,it was fine but the headset seamed to come loose after a few rides,cant see why the top bolt was tight etc.Its true it`s not the ideal thing to do but when needs must as they say
