Can someone help me value my Roberts please

:D I think it's too small for you, have a look on Evans website, there's a lovely new bike there that would be just the job, I can take this old Roberts off you, no worries!

Nice to see the campy chain set on a Shimano set up, a Roberts signature I believe

I really don't know if that's the case, that was my choice. Back in the day I swapped it for a Bullseye for a week, but could never get the thing to stay tight(it clamped around a special bb spindle like brake levers to a handlebar, rather than being bolted to a conventional spindle like the Campy. Didn't matter how tight it was, it worked loose in a day. I think they made 'crank keepers' to overcome this but I couldn't be bothered with all that and love the look of the Campy ones anyway so switched back. They probably weigh a ton, but you can't have it all.
As the hubs are Mavic the block had to be a screw on - it's a Sachs I think - works beautifully I must say, so the only Shimano on the whole bike is the XT shifters and mech.
I always loved the Mavic gear from the time except the headset, which I did have for a while. That did up with a tiny allen key bolt and was impossible to tight too - it did look nice though....

Good info on your bike there. Indeed Bullseye cranks do seem to like working loose, IRD keeper as you say is the solution, and I think a fella on here has made his own!

Guessing the hubs are dakars, which are indeed ace.

I think the campag headset you have is nicer than a mavic one

Yes Paris/Dakar rims and hubs, bought as a set. They have been absolutely beyond criticism I must say. Bearings are great even now - should really service them, but if it ain't broke eh?
I prefer the Campag headset too, although I'd like to know which set it's from. Like the cranks. I think they're both Centaur but just can't remember.

Re:

That is absolutely stunning and even more so that it's all original!

I think Sinnerman has got the price spot on.

That paint work is special too, might have to reconsider the paint job on the Dogs!

Cheers. Original is right I broke 2 tyre levers trying to get the slicks off on the weekend.

Once your get into this stuff again it's hard to resist looking for killer retro part a or b when you don't really need anything at all, but I'll leave it as is for the most part.

Proper rubber on now, bars are in the post, some nice old grips are here waiting and that just leaves new pads all around and some aesthetics like changing all the blue bolts for silver or whatever. I guess a new saddle wouldn't hurt (and keeping these current one might!) so guess that's on the list too.

Cheers,

D.

Re:

Sounds cool. What tyres did you go for?

You should start a thread in the build section. Would love to see some current pics once you've updated all the parts.

Specialised the Captains. Good a v good deal and they're just the kinda size I'm after.

I did think about a build thred but thought it would be a bit boring - not like I've got lots to do. But if peeps are interested, I'm very happy to share. I've had the bike over 20 years so perhaps I'm under selling it.
