Can someone explain SS to me

for about 6 years when I was a kid I hardly walked

no word of a lie i forgot how to walk at one point , specifically curbs . i was so used to hopping up them i was always trying to step onto the pavement from too far away

a quote i like is "i like to ride my bike , not operate it"

You'd definetely be bonkers to ride one offroad

Where have you been? :D

See, i told you, bonkers

Cab form on here rides a fixed off roader and the skills required are immense. Mucho kudos. 8) 8) its a rather lovely bike too :D

Yeah, and he's a big guy so i'll take back the bonkers statement and agree with you on the skill required

Still dont get it, and i dont care how big he is,

just dont tell him i said that though,

i'm sure that riding a penny farthing took some degree of skill, doesnt make me want to go and ride one off road though,

it just seems like a pointless backward step, says the man who wouldnt touch a full susser coz its too new fangled and wrong, oh and all of the above is in my opinion which is usually wrong, or at least contrary to the majority

posted this elsewhere by mistake, see always wrong

Without going too far, fixed riders will speak of a connection with the bike which is pretty much true. As well as fixed and singlespeed having a connection with the terrain.

single speed= cheep build up low matnence, good if you live in a flat area, with no hills

fixed gear = low matnence, cheep, and at least with hte 700c ccrew in my area its a style statement. a huge heaping style statement

ooo look at my flat chopped down bars on a road bike with no brakes spray painted frame and matching color deep v wheels. theyre the best with my messinger bag (read"fagbag").

downsides: your ideal gearing is irrelevant, with a geared bike you can at least get closer, ex: going up a hill i most certanly dont want to be in hte same gear as going down it.

Did it for a while, Very love hate relationship ...Only loved it afterwards, during always cursing !!

Came to the conclusion that for most of my riding ( bridals, trails in the cotswolds) didnt really suit me , Either popping my kneecaps out going uphill or spinning crazy going downhill ....Dont have the pleasure of flat where I live :D

Perversely I'm getting back into geared bikes but from the standpoint of a SS bike rider ie simplicity is the important feature. Thus friction shifter, no indexing :D

Love SS off road and in town but not out on the open road. Love fixed too, especially the intuitive speed control, controlling your speed downhill by muscular control is very satisfying.

I think I like all genre's of bike equally and would not dismiss any format until I've tried it. I will not DH or jump bike but thats only cause I'd hurt myself not because I think the bike or activity are stupid.

Try SS then decide, its the only way
