Can anyone identify this?

Chris king doesn't , that's why he sticks with that crappy design . It's the split wedge part that tightens it that's the key .

If you can get around that bit then you don't need to pay Cane ( we'll claim this design as our own and make ££££ ) Creek .

oh i see so cane creek have 'stolen' lots of ideas as they are/were based around the split wedge?

Cane Creek basically invented the aheadset (split wedge thing) and put a patent on it. So basically, if you or anyone else wanted to make one, you'll have to obtain a license (permission) from Cane Creek and pay them.

It's the same for a lot of other things too, not just bikes. Obtaining a strong patent is the key.

i didnt know it was the split wedge bit, i thought it was actually an aheadset i.e threadless headset

I may be getting things crossed, the gold thing in this picture is the split wedge.

yes, strange how a bit of metal with a slot cut out can be worth so much money! in theory they actually charge people to take material away!

Don't they. I know they use their own trade marks for the name but...

Do they make any?

Reason being is Cane Creek say 'King Cycle Group' use their patent
If Cane Creek owns the patent on the threadless headset, why are there other brands on the market?
We do own the threadless headset patent and introduced the technology to the industry. We manufacture our own headsets and have licensed the technology to a number of manufacturing partners and threadless headset licensees. They include Crank Brothers, Dia-Compe Taiwan, DT Swiss, Eastern, FSA (Tien Shin), Hope Technology, King Cycle Group, Race Face, Ritchey, Stronglight and Syncros. Each of these companies utilize our threadless technology under our patent.

King Cycle Group is Chris King

It was a while ago that I read about the Cane Creek patent so it's entirely possible I've remembered it wrong

I thought Chris King was the first to do the threadless headset in the 70s ?

And they don't even use a split wedge :?
