campy super record pista crankset stripped pedal threads

Hi all, new user to this great forum!

I'm attempting to build up an old Peugot track frame with "correct" parts. I recently bought a 1981 super record pista crankset from an online vintage parts dealer. The pedals came with stripped pedal threads which had slipped past their "QA" inspections. This had not been disclosed in the advertisement. Besides this, they are worth what I paid for them (at least based on current market value). The seller has offered to refund me in full.

These cranks are relatively hard to find and I'd rather not go through the process again as good deals are very hard to find.

The way I see it, I have two options:

1) Send them back and wash my hands of the situation.
2) Get helicoils installed at my LBS and ask the seller to reimburse me for the cost, which he may or may not do. I haven't asked yet.

My question is: Will the cranks be less valuable to a collector because they have helicoils? In my experience, helicoils are much stronger and more resistant to stripping/gauling than bare aluminum threads. But I'm not sure a collector would see eye to eye with me there.

Any insight would be great!

Edit: the female pedal threads in the crank are stripped, not the pedals themselves.

I take it that the threads are stripped in the crank, not the pedals?

Helicoil the crank. The crank is still a thing of beauty; you get to use it with a sense of enjoyment and satisfaction and it will look good.

If you ever do sell it I doubt it would make much difference to the final price, unless this was a completely original Hetchins which had never been ridden. Even then I don't think many would care. This isn't the same as a welded fracture. Which i have had done in a rather nice Ofmega before now.

Yes, you were correct in assuming that I was referring to the female pedal threads in the crank. That sounds like sage advise to me and was what I was leaning towards. I will get a quote from the LBS and see what the seller wants to do.
