campagnolo BB spindle/axle codes

I'm sure I've seen an explanation somewhere of the codes that are stamped on older campagnolo (and other makes) BB spindles, but I can't find it. can anyone help? I don't have any particular code that I need to know the meaning for, but some sort of explanation on how to interpret them would be very useful!
