Campag gear change conundrum

Campagnolo experts, please help!

I have 8 speed ergo power brifters. Have set up gear change, and indexes great except the chain will not hook up and stay on bottom gear (largest sprocket).

Looking at chain line, it looks quite an angle. Bottom bracket is a Token Italian ('campag type') 111mm which I thought was what I needed for my c- record chainset, but looking closer, there is quite a gap between the inside of each crank arm and the bottom bracket.

Is this the problem - bottom bracket too wide? and what width would work if this is the problem?

i seem to remember that the 8speed double chainset did need a 111mm BB axle so it should be ok chainline wise but the gap does look quite big on the axle/crank arm interface, potentially dumb question but have you really tightened the cranks up?

also what is the rear sprocket size? if it's quite big then the short cage mech might struggle, this is all assuming you have set the stop screws on the mech correctly.

the other thing to consider is, is the cable tension correct? i ask because if you click the shifter all the way to the smallest cog you will notice that the first shift from 8th to 7th feels quite different to the rest of the shifts up and people sometimes mistake that for actually being a shift meaning that when they do set up the gears they are one shift out meaning that the shift to first gear on the ergolever is actually the shift from 3rd to 2nd and that would explain the chain not staying or getting on to first.

does that make sense?

111mm BB is right width...well its what I've got on my 992 with C Record 8 speed. Are you sure you've backed the rear mech low adj screw out to allow the rear mech to swing over enough to hit first?

Centaur 111 is the recommended BB for old C-Record cranks. I have a c-record era chorus running on a centaur 111 BB and it's gravy.
