On the right i have a snapped axle from a model 500 7 speed hub (held together with a skewer) on the left I have a NOS model 550 spare axle , any idea why the spare axle in the middle (model 500?) is a few mm shorter ? (the thick section that sits under the freewheel that is )

I'm no expert so it's just a guess, but was the 500 available in both 126 and 130mm OLN?

what's the difference in length?

the 501 was 126 and 130 mm with a 4mm insert fitted , the 500 and 550 were only 126 i am pretty sure

I think & its only a guess it that one axel the shorter one is for 126mm OLN 5-6 speed freewheel
And the longer one is is for 130mm OLN for 7-8 speed freewheel being as its longer on the FW side

the shorter/longer fat section only refers to the DS bearing placement , the "professional " model 550 moves the bearings further apart than the model 500
