Calculating spoke length

Right ive got a bit of a predicament here.


I want some wheels built (700c) And ive got the hubs i want to use. But havnt yet bought rims and therefore not bought spokes either.

Iv noticed alot of rim manufacturers dont list dimentions of the whole rim. I.e inside dia

My main problem being im using a large flanged bmx hub in the front, and i dont want to buy brand new rims only to find that spokes for it arnt available..... :roll:

Anyone got any ideas?

I was thinking rigida sputnik as its nothing special so keeps the cost down.... But looks ok.


Idealy if possible could someone calculate it for me? Im useless with the online calculators... Maths isnt realy my strongpoint. Nor is understanding all the wheelbuilder lingo.

Assuming i buy a sputnik rim. and use my hub (i can supply any dimensions you need)

Would realy be appriciated

This is the simplest to use spoke calculator I've come across!

You can probably find the ERD (effective rim diameter) for Sputniks on line - and easiest for the hub is to measure it.

Has a database of stuff, and was based on a much used spocalc spreadsheet.

The bloke who made it still develops it and will add features if anyone has any ideas.

*later... add your hub model to the database for everyone to use in future.


So quickly doing this, searched BMX picked a high flange front.
Search Sputnik
Selected it,
then 36 hole 3x and it gives this data
Hub: XS BMX high flange, front
Rim: Rigida Sputnik
Number of spokes: 36
Crosses: 3
Spoke length left: 286.1
Spoke length right: 286.1

Which will be a start

DT make that length, though you'll need to find someone who will stoke or get hold of them for you. Could try giving CRC a ring for that.

Thats spot on just used it and im getting 286.3 mm spokes... does that mean 286mm will do or do i need 287? or do they do them in points ? Ive never had to buy spokes... gotta learn somewhere i guess haha.. Cheers guys

286mm would be fine then. Make sure you've got your holes and cross correct.

Unfortunately it may be wrong (it never has for me) but that would normally be due to the hub/rim data put in.

Usually in even numbers as far as I know - for 286.3 e.g. I'd go 286. Price varies considerably - plain gauge, single- or double-butted, silver, black etc etc!

If you give us hub measurements (width - flange centres and diameter - spoke hole centres) and build patteren, then I expect "we" will double check the calcs!

The rear hub dimentions are.

*47mm flange (measured accross from centres of oposing spoke holes)

*25 mm from flange to centre.

*entire width is 116mm from outer edge of either locknut


Front hub is

*64mm flange

*33mm from centre to flange either side....

have i done that right or wrong?

Sorry if im being a bit of a dunce. Got a banging headache and realy strugling to get my head round this atm :roll:

ASSUMING 1. 36 spoke, 3 cross
and 2. I am interpreting your measurements correctly
I make it 288.8 rear and 286.0 front.

Suggest you wait for a 2nd/3rd opinion!

cheers mate thats what ive got... Im guessing 3 cross is the standard way of doing it?

Ill wait for more checks on this or people telling me i measured it wrong lol...
