Cable catcher

Something I think must have passed me by BITD? I’ve been restoring/refurbing a couple of bikes for a friend. I asked if he wanted the dork disk taking off the rear hub also the the front/rear reflectors removing. He was fine with the disk coming off but said the reflectors he’d like left as they catch the straddle cable if the brake cable snaps. I thought not much of it then saw a Dia compe canti hanger with a knobble on the front which I guess is specifically for this purpose.
Has this happened to anyone? Is it something you still use or leave on? I don’t see loads of bikes with reflectors on on here, they were always the first bits to go when I got a bike myself!

Remove the catcher and gently file a couple of the strands on the brake cable. This will make every ride extra exciting for your friend as they just won't know when it will give way and the straddle will bite!
Think of it as one of the positives of using cantis along with ease of set-up...

Sorry, the heat is making me facetious. I've never seen a dork-nobble like that above! Quite clever though. Your friend just needs to check every so often it's not fraying and begone with the reflectors. I've rarely had a cable snap, but would a straddle cable getting sorta jammed in the tyre nobbles go as far as to cause a full lock-up and over the bars? I'd have thought the tyre nobbles would give way and make a racket and slow down quickly, but not immediately lock-up.
