Broken Shoulder

I broke my shoulder on the 15th of this month but didn't actually find out it was broken until the 25th. It has broken cleanly in the middle and has not been displaced in the intervening period and is already laying down new bone growth. So I wen t o the fracture clinic yesterday and the Doc says I should be fine going back to work in a couple of weeks (my job includes a lot of lifting and heavy manual work) so I am asking those of you on here what their experiences of healing times have been (I'm 39 and generally heal very quickly and I am in good health).

I broke my shoulder (well the side of the ball where all the muscles attach) a few years back in 2008 and still get the occasional graunch and click now and again. The initial recovery wasn't helped by the fact that the hospital missed the break and I had two weeks of physio on a suspected torn rotator cuff muscle before the consultant checked the xrays and found a break! After this I was given physio to help the recovery, which I probably should have down more of.... I have a physical job too and feel for you buddy, I was back at work two weeks after the break was found, on light duties, which was perhaps a little foolhardy, but I had the privilege of running a small team instead of running it and being in it!

Hope your recovery goes well and do as much physio as you can, it's dull but you will reap the benefits.

MTFU! Only kidding. I broke my collar bone but didn't find out until 6 weeks later. Yes, it was sore and movement was restricted but maybe I have a high pain threshold.

Found out when getting a massage whilst on holiday in Turkey. Walked into the room - the guy looked at me and said, "You're a cyclist?, Yes?" Turns out he used to be a masseuse on some top race team in the 90's. Gave a fantastic massage, really knew his stuff. When he got to my right shoulder he paused, dug around for a moment and then...

OUCH! I nearly climbed up the wall with pain. He said that I must have recently broken my collar bone. He could feel where the bone was broken and obviously started to knit together. When we got back to the UK got an x-ray which showed it all up clear as day.

I have a high pain threshold which is why it took ten days to actually find out it was broken, I did three days loading in the Stone Roses to rehearsals before f@@king it up on something minor (stretching a bungee cord) but since Friday it is very painful and I am trying to keep it still as much as I can but not wearing a sling. I have started taking Glucosamine and Chondroitin as an aid to recovery just have to keep moving it a little more each day and try and not overdo it before the next job starts.

Has anyone ever found it hurts more once you know about it ?

I have knackered loads of stuff in the past and not noticed anything untoward other than a bit of pain and irritation until what my body did caused a problem for I somehow developed scoliosis and pronounced lordosis due to ignoring a back injury, which turned out to be slipping a disc twice in the same place, but then pain I never really computed as anything more than an irritation. Interesting test physicians perform to ascertain muscle tone at the base of the spine, but anyway, four years of dancing has just about got it under control as that is why I dance, to sort my sodding posture out and with it strengthen the core muscles.

I have been in more pain since I went for the X-ray but I think I aggravated it as I had been using my arm extensively all week lifting heavy things at work and cycling but now I am in a lot of pain when I move it too much and don't want/can't afford to jeopardize it knitting together as quickly as possible so I am trying to keep it moving but not too much even though the doc told me to be raising it above my head. As it gets better I will be moving it as much as possible but just not right now.

Keep on to them to check it. Years ago I had a massive crash and dislocated my right shoulder. The pain was bad but got worse when on the second bounce it went back in.

Other obvious injuries included quite bad skin/flesh loss. Although very sore the hospital didn't x-ray my left shoulder as I had landed on the right one.

Turns out it was broken and just healed on its own. It seems to have trapped a nerve and has been crap ever since.

Broke my left collarbone in december, had it operated because it broke in 4 places. I'm not fully recovered yet, but can nearly ride the same stuff as before the accident.
Make sure you move the arm/shoulder, but stop when it hurts too much. I was told not to raise the arm more than 90 degrees in the first 2-3 weeks.

It feels quite good now where the break is but the lack of movement I have done means the joint is painful now when I take my arm over 90* but I need to keep pushing it a bit further every day to speed my recovery now.
