Brake Fluid

Had to buy some brake fluid today so i popped into halfords to pick up some dot4. i would not normally do this as i buy most of my stuff on line because it always seems cheape. i picked up a bottle with a price of £4.59. A guy who was standing by me said if you go around to the hardware shop you can get that for £1.99. I put the halfords one back and thought it won't hurt to have a look so around i went. Sure enough a bottle of Dot4 brake fluid larger than halfords one £1.99.Can any one tell me what the difference is... apart from the money...

These things sometimes just happen ... supply & demand, old stock being sold off, conning a captive audience, lack of product knowledge ...

same applies to engine oil

Halfords are very expensive

Sainsburys H7 headlight bulbs, £3.49, Halfords - £9.49

I can buy Bosch for £4 ffs!

maybe i should go back to the hardware shop tomorrow and buy another 2. be years before i need any more....

Brake fluid is hydroscopic (absorbs water from the air) so unless the bottle is completly air tight it won't keep.

Hygroscopic If the bottle is unopened and still sealed it'll keep for years.

DOT 5 isn't hydroscopic and won't strip paint off your frame if spilled and it provides long-lasting protection against corrosion for bikes that are stored for long periods of time or are ridden in wet environments.

Mind you it is damn expensive and won't mix with DOT 3, 4 or 5.1.
In fact if you have DOT 3, 4 or 5.1 in your system you have to thoroughly flush it our before putting in the DOT 5

AND Halfords have never heard of it!
