Thanks David, that really helps - got some of the necessary already and nice to see that my general lash up approach to builds has some sort of higher validation -death to the tyranny of the groupset!

Cross bikes always seem to have had more of a "pick & mix" approach to builds in any case; I think mine has parts from about 10 different makers where an off-the-shelf road bike might make do with 1!

The mail criteria for a cross bike in the 70/80's was weight, so a pair of scales was a requirement..

TTT bars/stems were a lot lighter than Cinelli and they did not bend or fall apart, I remember Eric DE Vlaeminck coming down an icy decent in a race in Switzerland with one half of his bars being swung in the air..

Frames were built with the thinest tubing you could get away with. Harry Quinn built me one with some Columbus pursuit tubing in the rear stays and top tube - 531SL seat tube and 531 DB down tube and lots of cut outs - also we used Zeus centre pull brakes after throwing most of the bits away and just used the arms fitted to the nomal braze on fittings saved another 4 ounces !!!wish I knew where it ended up..

Zeus 2000 alloy freewheels saved a lot too..

so get the wifes scales out !!!!!!
