I'm looking for some information on Bontrager CX frames/bikes and it seems that Google isn't particularly my friend - any got anyone knowledge they can share?

In particular, I guess that they came as frame and fork only? If so, what sort of build would be simpatico?

What sort of vintage is it? The original edition of Simon Burney's CX training manual is full of equipment recommendations relevant to the mid-late 80s/early 90s period. I can have a look tonight and post a few notes up on here if needed.

Thanks David, exactly that era so any further details on equipment recommendations etc. would be great.

Didn't have chance to check RB last night so have only just read your follow-up. I'll have a look at the Burney book this evening.

Sorry - stuffed up again and totally forgot, been a bit pre-occupied with a forthcoming job interview. But from memory, I think Simon's recommendations away from the usual Campag/Shimano family included Simplex derailleurs (possibly the 6000 and 6600??), Mafac/Modolo/Weinmann cantilevers and - inevitably - Lyotard pedals.

I will check the details tonight or over the weekend!

Thanks David, info will be really useful but no major rush - best of luck with the interview!

OK, here goes - dug the book out at last!

For brakes, what I'd written based purely on memory was right (ditto pedals; clipless were barely heard of at the time). Gran Compe Aero was Burney's preferred lever when the book was written.

Gears - it was the Simplex 5500 rear mech that the book recommended, along with the Mavic SSC. No specific front mechs mentioned. Simplex retrofriction or Suntour ratchet (which I've encountered in the past and they are nice levers) for bar-end shifters*.

Hubs - Mavic 550RD. Zenith still do screw-on freewheels (Spa Cycles in Harrogate sells 'em) up to 8sp if you want threaded hubs such as these or 501s.

Tub rims - Mavic GP4 or 2CD2. No mention of clincher rims/tyres as these were hardly used in competitive cross back then. However, I don't think any vaguely retro cross tubs exist these days. You might be better off trying to go a bit "90s" and using Open 4CD clincher rims with original green Michelin Muds if you can find some on eBay.

Bars - Cinelli 64 (paired with a 1A or XA stem) or 3TTT Superlight.

Chainset - all of the usual suspects mentioned, personally I'd go for Stronglight as with the right model you can go <38T for the inner. Stronglight also recommended in the book for BBs.

Headset - Tange Allez.

Seatpin - Simplex or Shimano, with a Rolls or Turbo saddle.

Hope this list is of some use to you.

*Barely any reference to indexing in this book....how times have changed; I'd be lost without Ergopower on my CX bike!!

Thanks David, that really helps - got some of the necessary already and nice to see that my general lash up approach to builds has some sort of higher validation -death to the tyranny of the groupset!
