Bontrager Comp Fork - For Sale

89Roberts

Retro Newbie
Hi - For sale are my lovely old "best" forks.
I will put them on eBay to end next Sunday too - (16th November).

I had them from new as part of a sponsorship deal and these were used for just two seasons (90-91 I think). They were fitted twice (to the same bike) - I put Project 2's on in between - and have had other forks on for the last 23 years. I think now I have to admit that these are not going to be used. :)

NB - they have the number "7" stamped underneath the crown, I don't know if this is a style number or serial number as I have not seen any others.

They are straight and true, quite light (around 900g I think) and pretty bulletproof.
Aluminium Crown - 4 bolts (never undone)
Steel legs - factory chromed (never removed)
Steel Steerer (threaded)
~137mm steerer (from bottom of the bearing race to top of the thread)
~30mm of thread - good condition.
They have been in the bottom of a bike box - and so have a few minor marks (I have tried to show them in the photos, but they just don't really come out in pictures). From more than 3' away they look pretty much new. They need a clean - I have just wiped them for the pictures. There is marking around the brake mounting points - on the front face of the mounts - where the brakes are fitted. I had a failure of an IRD switchback brake and the spring came out of the little hole. It has not affected the hole whatsoever, and you probably won't see it when the brakes are fitted, but worth mentioning (it is a 2mm ding plus scratching - you might just spot it in the pictures - I have not touched it up but you could probably get it filed/colored black if it is an issue).

The threads are all good - but I can't find the threaded brake boss mounts. IF I find them I will throw them in, but assume that you will need these to fit your brakes. There is also a bottom headset bearing race fitted - it is completely unpitted (probably a new XT or Dura Ace one) and I have left it on.

Thank you for looking at this post.

Will sell to best bidder on or before Sunday 16th (on eBay) OR £140 from RetroBike - I will try to put this post in the right place.
I will package it nicely and send Royal Mail Tracked to anywhere in the UK - I will try to do it next day if I can.
If you are not in the UK I should still be able to send it - but contact me first.
I will try to answer any questions you have but am not on here every day so please be patient :-)

Re:

Hi and welcome :D !
Next time you're on here, either add a firm price for these babies, because those are the rules (this is not eBay, thank god), or move your ad to the 'eBay and Marketplace Watch' forum with a link to the corresponding page on the Bay.
Thanks, GLWS.

Re:

No probs, you're not the first on here who experiences those 'familiarization issues'..

BTW, GLWS = Good Luck With the Sale ;)

I guess these are inch eight steerer? Is it swappable? Might be interested if they are inch ahead or if I can swap the steerer to make it that.

Hi, thanks for the question.
steerer is 1" but threaded.
I know you can just undo the four bolts in the crown and take the fork apart - I think it was partly done so you could replace the steerer or fork leg(s) without buying a new fork - although I never heard of any one needing to.
But yes - it should be easy to take the 1" threaded steerer out and replace it with a 1" ahead (no thread) steerer - I have no idea where you would get that from though (and have never taken these forks apart). Sorry - hope this helps.
