BMW power steering question

I have a 1993 BMW318. Power steering started to leak so took to local garage.

Initially told a simple job but now have been informed the steering rack needs to be replaced as the housing (rotary valve?) for the piston shaped thing at the end of the steering column has some serious groves in it. I'm told it should be smooth. Is this right?

Sounds right.

Check the price of a new rack and try not to get stiffed. It is not that hard a job.
