just reboot
have you installed anything recently, try booting into safemode and removing it, or physically move it, if it is hardware
unplug everything from in, with just the basics plugged in (mouse keyboard, monitor)
put in the microsoft cd, and try running the recovery option

also to add it can be an indication that your memory is faulty or hdd is developing a fault or motherboard memory controllor is faulty so if it does load i would suggest backing up as much info as possible, if you have added anyting new check you havent loosened the memory modules in system and if you have 2 in try booting with just the one alternating what one used to boot
any basic burn in test will test memory and board for you if does load can get most free ones from www.majorgeeks.com for hard drive tests better going to the manufacturers websites they have software you can download and put on disk will test the drive and tell if its faulty or developing a fault
there can also be a slim chance its software related you can try a windows repair that may fix it or try and get a piece of software called winternals erd only works on xp and quite nifty as it will load even if theres a fault on system and let you access data on drives to backup and has some fix solutions for software on it that allow you to fix windows using erd

check to see if the cable to the hd hasnt vibrated loose..or stick the hd in another pc if ya have one and use it as a backup and see if that works....

oh and get a back up.....
this happened to my pc wityh all my wedding pictures once....id be dead now if i hadnt managed to find the prob.now have 2 back ups and the hd on the ps3 and all 3 laptops carry my music...photos are on 2 hds near my feet so if there is a fire i just grab them and go.......then i come back and get the kids...

Why dont you just get an online sotrage option some free ones available and some cheap ones aswell

i can justify having all those gadgets then......
you can justify it and in the event that you failed to save a single drive you have the ever reliable online storage that the wife doesnt know about and you pull all pics back and your in the good books forever

im hoping when google get that os released thats purely cloud based i shall use that on the acer netbook white 4g i have in me bag which will be perfect for the job...
