We haven't been driving uninsured and our premiums are all paid and up to date
maybe I'm reading too much into this, but this seems to contradict your opening post ...
Checking back through her bank account the missus noticed that the car insurance hadn't been taken for 2 months so gave them a call today..

Perhaps you didn't read it twice before posting...

"The woman on the phone said the policy had gone into default and that, unless she paid the 2 months now, the policy would be cancelled.. "

Would be.

It is normal for companies to wait for a couple of failed payments before cancelling an agreement.

Glad you got a good deal sorted out. I shopped around for my trade insurance and have managed to get it under £600 fully comp. with bikes on it. Stoked.

You gotta shop around these days.. pain in the butt but oh so necessary...
We used to do the traders thing but we stopped changing cars so much and called it a day when it topped £500.. that was 3 years ago..

Current quotes are only tentative, it's not due til 11th May.. but I doubt it'll change much from about £220 (as opposed to £560 for the last year - but that was Admiral Multicar and we only have the truck now)..
£56/month down to £20/month that'll do nicely 8)
