Bikes without photographs

Firstly I want to make it clear that not everyone does this..just a very small but dishonest minority

Do we have any rules about posting bikes for sale without photographs?

I ask because summers coming, word seems to be getting out a retro market exists and pound to a penny of horseshit..some of them are stolen

I'm lucky in that I've never had one stolen but dread the day when it does happen

those that sell them tend to advertise on ebay generically in the title say..mountain bike..only to reveal say it maybe a kona in the description..this normally foxes the owner who's looking for it

in gumtree they do the same but also do not put a picture up until you click on the advert and see the hidden details

so..given we seem to be having a rise at the momment of newbies posting bikes for sale never to be seen again after the sale..I wonder wether it should be a requirement/safeguard against stolen bikes... to have a picture of the actual bike for sale as well as the add ..or get the add pulled?

what do you think?

also quite a few of the car forums i go on wont allow the ad to be posted with out a pic and in the pic must be user name and date wrote on a bit of paper to proove they actually have the items there selling

Not everyone has a digital camera. I don't see any particular rise in newbies selling this year other than the usual suns out seasonal drift. For as long as I've been a member here you tend to see people digging out old stuff they dont know the details of, from the shed that maybe used to belong to some one who has flown the nest. I don't want to see an increase in paranoia over this.

And any way as mentioned who buys a bike without photos ?

In this day and age those that dont have a digital camera know someone who does and so a picture can be obtained. I and many others wont buy what we cant see

some may not have a digital camera but most have camera phones and most these days are of a good quality

to be honest if your a genuine seller..you will find a way to put up a pic if you want people to buy it

It's worse, imo, when the seller lies about condition and neglects to include little details..
Pics won't necessarily show that..

Sorry currently on my iPhone on a train so responses will be short. I totally agree pictures are a good idea, I just worry about people spreading there own paranoia where it may not be just. As a newbie on this site you can't even post pictures in your first post. On top of that there is the whole issue around image sizes, to attach an image taken on almost any modern cameras default quality setting to a post in the forum requires a reasonable amount of knowledge and image manipulation skill due to the permitted file sizes. We have always had people who simply sign up to shift that " old bike " that is cluttering up the shed.

We have seen and will continue to see people signing up with one post to sell a bike, It is a shame they don't stick around longer, but they should not be branded crooks for not having the tech or tech no how by a group stirred up by threads like this into believing anything without a photo is by default dodgy. Common sense should be allowed to come into play.
