This was taken this morning at the site of The Battle of Northampton 1460.
I just noticed that it was fought on this very day, July 10th, exactly 565 years ago.

From wikipedia
''It was a major battle of the Wars of the Roses. The opposing forces were an army led by nobles loyal to King Henry VI of the House of Lancaster, his Queen Margaret of Anjou and their six-year-old son Edward, Prince of Wales, on one side, and the army of Edward, Earl of March, and Warwick the Kingmaker on the other. The battle was the first in which artillery was used in England.''

The site is at Delapre Abbey, between the old house and the golf course. There is disagreement among historians exactly where the armies lined up at the start of the battle.

The photo shows an area south east of the Rookery that would have seen heavy fighting no matter which version is correct.

Any blood drenched soil near you? Let's see it.

The Battle of Heiligerlee was fought on 23th of may 1568. It was the first battle won by the Dutch in the 80 year war that led to the establishment of the Dutch Republic. It is 9,5 km from where I live. This is the entrance to the grove that is on the ground where the battle was fought:

And this is the statue erected in memory of it one km further down the road.
