Hi Guys..

I currently have a Ti Raleigh technium. Problem is old age ( I'm 50 in a few weeks), a bad back, ( 30 years a prop forward) and most recently a Quad bypass makes it just to uncomfortable to ride. Upper back pain between the shoulder blades.

Problem is I love to ride and Ilive on the north downs so i need a real bike rather than a cruiser so does anyone have any suggestions on an old skool bike with a more upright riding position that might be more comfortable. or the record I've tried different bars and stems with no luck, maybe full sus is the way to go?

cheers

martin

Hi there, I am a back suferer too.

You could do what i did and bye yourself a Santa Cruz Heckler.

Great ride, good weight, good value and easy to maintain with a single pivot design.

If you have got the time and or the wedge track down a superlight with some good quality components. I promise you will be smiling out on those trails once more.

Good luck with the back. All the best,Al

I too suffer with back pain :( Sad thing is I don't think any retrobike are that forgiving (far too racey)

I have an '05 Rocky Mountain Blizzard that is by far the most comfortable HT I've ever ridden :) looks good too with it's slim steel tubes & black n white paint :D

It's not too stretched & has a fairly high front end that suits my oldish bones nicely

Hope this helps.

thanks guys,

I other thing I have considered is getting a pair of old fashion "cow horns" or even "ape hangers" made. Not so good for the trails but might help my road trips.

I guess I need two bikes at least!

:D What about a pair of Jones H-bars? Not cheap but very cool & would make a big difference to any bikes riding position :o

This is like swearing in church, but have you considered a 29er?

They work best for taller riders, but big wheels and lower pressures make for a distinct plus in comfort and the front end is nice and high by default. And lately plenty options are availabe including proper full sussers.

Ditto on the Heckler too, I built one in 1997 and after countless evolutions it is still my allrounder to this day. In fact I have a grin from ear to ear from the 50 clicks I rode on it this morning. FWIW I had a bad hernia few years ago.

But don't take my word for it, test ride some options, you'll know.

Enjoy!!
